Honeywell MF08CESWW 8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control - White Review

Honeywell seems to provide a range of reasonably priced and reliable portable air conditioners, based upon my research and experience. However, there are some important points to consider before making a purchase.

I think most consumers are tempted buy the cheapest air conditioner model rather than one that will really do the job, since even the cheapest air conditioners are painfully expensive! As with any other product, differentiating between models can be confusing (in this case, BTU ratings in particular are not something most people really understand), and product claims are often somewhat exaggerated (e.g., the sports car maker claims you can fit two passengers in a tiny backseat-- while technically this might be possible, the experience will not be pleasant for those who draw the short straws). Similarly, while this 8,000 BTU unit does cool 300 square feet, most people will feel that it does not cool as quickly or effectively (in other words, to a low enough temperature) as they had hoped. Unless you will be happy with a still-warm-but-not-stiflingly-hot room, consider a more powerful unit.

I live in a two-story 1800s house in Ohio and rely solely upon portable air conditioners for summer cooling. In my experience 8,000 BTU units have difficulty conquering the summer heat and humidity in a top-story bedroom. Unless you have a modern home (which would presumably have central air!), a unit this small will most likely not effectively cool a 10 x 12 room located on an upper floor without some help (good attic insulation, great windows, and cooling tree cover), and it may not be adequate for any sunny room. Air movement and especially dehumidifying power just can't compete with more powerful models. For most people who need a window air conditioner, a far wiser choice would be a 12,000 BTU portable unit such as the Honeywell MN12CES 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control - Black/Silver or the Delonghi PAC N120E 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner. The difference in cost is well worth it (an additional $150). I have had two of the Delonghi Pinguino PAC N120E units for several years (one on each level of my house), as well as a 12,000 BTU model bought from the Home Shopping Network many years ago. Over the past decade I have found that the 12,000 BTU level cools larger areas very quickly and reasonably effectively. A caveat: People whose houses have open floor plans/those who need to cool very large spaces will find that the 12,000 BTU unit does provide moderate cooling but can't achieve the chilliness that some people want from air conditioning. (I plan to use this Honeywell to cool a small guest room on a floor that also uses a 12,000 BTU unit; I would absolutely not recommend an 8,000 BTU as the best bang for the buck for a person purchasing only one unit.)

Honeywell offers several good features in comparison to my much-loved and sturdy Pinguinos. Most important is an easily removable and washable filter. The downfall of many portable units seems to be dust, which ends up clogging up the works and can result in leaks and puddles (I haven't experienced this, but many, many Amazon reviews of various makes and models will attest to that issue). Both brands have remotes and are programmable, have castor wheels, have easy-install window vents and hoses, and have 3 functions (fan, cooling, and dehumidifier). The Pinguino has a very sensitive thermostat, making it easy to adjust one or two degrees. I appreciate that the Honeywell has quiet operation (54-55 decibels, based upon size), and don't appreciate that the Pinguino is described by Delonghi as having "silent operation" when it is, in fact, as loud as most air conditioners when operating at full steam (and as quiet as a mid-size fan when desired temperature has been achieved/is being maintained).

If you are considering whether or not to pay the additional cost of a portable unit (one that sits on wheels and utilizes a hose to exhaust hot air), I for one think they are well worth it. These units are far, far easier and safer to install and store during cooler months than traditional window mounted units, and they will not damage windowsills or window frames. They work in windows that slide open to the side as well as typical windows. Portable units are wonderful for people with limited strength and mobility (initially hauling this unit up a flight of stairs is not pretty, but once the unit is situated on the floor where you will use it it can be rolled into a closet during cool months, or even kept in a corner since it is not unsightly). I will never buy another traditional window-mounted air conditioner after using a portable air conditioner. But I do advise buyers to be sure they buy a unit that is powerful enough to meet their expectations.
