Like many, I paused on ordering because of the numerous negative reviews. However, being pretty handy I figured I could beef up anything as long is the parts were straight and not broken. So all worked out fine for this product.
Pros
- Average-to-good quality wood (probably a B class)
- Easy, in-line/straight set up (the screws went through the holes cleanly)
- Portability (would be easy to disassemble and move)
- Good quality cover (I was actually very pleasantly surprise by this)
- Time... time... time... (as shipped, sets up in 30 minutes or less)
- Price (very good value for cost of materials and setup time)
Cons
- All joints/connections double stapled rather than nailed
- No glue on joists
- 3 or 4 of the slats were pretty warped and/or bowed
- Not enough slats in my opinion for a latex mattress (I've read the gap should be about 2 inches; these would be 3 to 3 1/2)
Specifics
Frankly, it's amazing to me what some people in these reviews think they should receive for under $200. It's like the person who goes to the restaurant with 4 different coupons, tries to apply them all... then still tips poorly.
PEOPLE, YOU'RE PAYING LESS THAN $200!
And for the NUMEROUS reviews I've read where people have written this could be build for $100, their clueless. Here's the fact...
I built nearly the same setup for a twin XL. Materials alone cost me $40. I bought/used 1" x 2 3/8" x 96" cut down to 39". So, 9 boards/furring strips, all Spruce, at $2.49 is $22.41 plus 10% tax. Another $18 for the Spruce supports/crosses, etc. plus a few bucks in screws and tax. Total was just over $40. Then, you'd double that for a king size.
HOWEVER, it would take you AT LEAST 2 hours to build. I built the twin in just over an hour, and I had all parts pre-cut, and I've remodeled several houses. I have a clue as to what I'm doing.
So, seriously, what is your time worth? I'll gladly pay the extra $100 or so to save a few hours. Most people, it would take them half a day to build, provided they had the tools.
Also, ANYONE comparing this quality to Ikea is LOST. This wood is Spruce, kiln dried. Nearly EVERYTHING Ikea sells in terms of frames/foundations is a very low quality pine. This wood is machined, sanded on all 4 sides, and I only found a few areas of splintering, etc. Again, price vs value.
Now, which I chose to do what put a 1.5" screw at every connection that had a staple. Then, I added about 6 extra slats to close the gap to 2". I screwed the slats down.
Frankly, the screws are overkill if the unit won't be moved and will make a HUGE hassle to move in the future if you don't have room. Remember, a mattress spreads the weight out evenly. And a latex mattress weights more than 200 pounds. Once on the foundation, that thing will be solid and the slats won't move due to the weight and pressure.
But... I've always just preferred screws so I modified it anyway. Again, probably overkill, yet I like the peace of mind
So, all things considered, I wished I would have ordered after reading/researching for about 20 minutes rather than the hours I spent. And I would DEFINITELY recommend this product. Any issues can be fixed very easily by anyone who's halfway handy, or knows someone who is.
PS - Actually ordered 2 of these units but cancelled 1 before being shipped. Seller didn't do what most companies do, which is ship both anyway and then respond to your email after the units are on the track. S/he cancelled the extra unit before shipping and credited my credit card. Props to them.
