Note: Foam bedding is not necessarily for everyone. I'd suggest trying it out if you have the option (friends, retail outlet) before making your first investment.A few years ago, I got a Sleep Innovations 2.0-inch Memory Foam Topper with 260-Thread-Count Cotton Fitted Cover and I fell IN LOVE with it. I had dabbled in fancy mattress pads before, but that one exceeded all expectations. So it seemed only natural to snag this gel topper with the same thickness dimensions as I was already enamored of the Sleep Innovations brand.
When I received this Sleep Innovations product, I immediately removed with my old well-worn cover. I let this one unravel and air out. There is a distinctly chemical smell right out of the box, but this is similar to EVERY other foam brand I have experienced. I let the topper rest for a couple of days as it took shape. If you let it rest properly, you should experience no unpleasant smell upon use. This may be a common issue with first time users.
The product is great to sleep on, you notice the difference immediately. It might be an adjustment if you're not used to the bed conforming to your shape--but I love this thickness.
Two words of warning, however. It is difficult for one person to get the heavy and enormous foam piece into the provided cloth cover. As the foam does not slide, this is best handled as a two person endeavor. In fact, I left this on the bed half covered up until someone could help me finish up. Also, and this seems fairly obvious, if this is your first experience with the foam toppers--make sure you have deep pocket sheets or are committed to getting them. This obviously adds depth to your mattress. I know that's a "duh" but you'd be surprised what some people might not think about.
Gel versus Traditional Memory Foam: As it boils down, I'm not sure that I noticed a huge difference overall. The gel, perhaps, stayed a bit firmer but I guess I was perfectly satisfied with the traditional option. There's nothing wrong with this item, and some may prefer it, but next time I'll probably just return to the other. Still recommended with ease, I just wasn't as blown away as I was with my first Sleep Innovations experience. KGHarris, 3/12.
