The IQ120 connects to nearly any charcoal or wood fueled barbecue pit. Here's the amazing part: You set the cooking temperature on the dial and it then regulates the cooking temperature just like a kitchen oven does. In fact, it regulates the cooking temperature BETTER than most kitchen ovens! And better than a kitchen oven, your foods cook in a smoky environment that is naturally moist resulting in foods that are juicy, fall-off-the-bone tender, and simply delicious. The IQ120 is installed on most cookers without tools. First, the standard adapter is attached to a lower fire vent using the thumb/toggle bolt. The remaining two lower vents are then sealed with the included high temperature aluminum tape. The IQ120 's air hose is then connected to the adapter. Finally, the temperature sensor is attached to the cooking grate and plugged into the IQ120. The only thing left is to get hungry! When I cook ribs or even a pork butt, I generally can stay nearby to keep my Weber 721001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 18-1/2-Inch Charcoal Smoker, Black at the right temperature using my Maverick Et732 Wireless Grill Smoker Thermometer Burgundy + Meathead Magnet, but it can be a bit of effort. When I wanted to cook brisket, it seemed like too much effort, so I took the plunge. I opted for this solution vs a more modular and configurable one largely due to cost and simplicity. As a compromise, I opted for this somewhat programable model vs the simpler one.

Setup works is simple enough, though it's a bit of a pain to route the toggle bolt into the vent. After that and closing the other two vents, I was ready to go. I plugged the unit in to power, and was greeted with alarms due to no probes being installed, but that was a quick fix. Alas my Weber lacks a handle to hang it from, but it's easy to find a way to hang it. In use, it's a little complicated, but setting a temperature is easy enough. It does a very good job, but it took some trial and error. First off, it cannot put out a fire, rather it can feed or deprive a fire of air, but if you start with too much heat, you'll need to use other means to lower the temp (the real lesson is to start smaller fires with this and use the minion method). The other issue is that there are a variety of settings, both on the dial, and in terms of vents (both on the Weber and on the unit) to adjust.

All in all I like it, but it's a work in progress. I'm hoping to get to use it again soon. My only real concern is whether the unit is weather proof. There's no indication one way or another.
